2023-24 Georgia Peach Books

Each year librarians and teachers select twenty young adult books that they feel are the best of the best. Teens across Georgia read and vote on the selections. Last year's Peach winners where Legendborn by Deonn and Ace of Spades by Abike-Iyimide. Below are the books on this year's list:

So far I have read This Poison Heart, The Heartbreak Bakery and The Agathas. I liked them all but I haven't found that one book I LOVE yet. (Last year that book was Project Hail Mary, but Legendborn was a close second).

Dr. Drouillard's Donations

For the seventh year, Dr. Colette Drouillard of Valdosta State University, donated thousands of dollars worth of new books for K - 12 students in Decatur County. These books, which include picture books, middle grades, and young adult titles, will be cataloged and added to the collections of the school Media Centers in the county if they have hardback covers and used as prizes and giveaways if they are paperbacks. Dr. Drouillard is an associate professor in the Department of Library and Information Studies at VSU and an alumna of FSU's School of Library and Information Science. In the past seven years, Dr. Drouillard has donated close to fifty thousand dollars worth of new books to Decatur County Schools.

Welcome back, Bearcats! Have you read the new Harry Potter play yet? I am hoping to get to it this weekend. I am excited about our 2016-17 Peach book selections. So far I have read The Novice (fantasy adventure), Dime (realistic and SAD), When (paranormal thriller), Under a Painted Sky (historical fiction with kickbutt heroines), most of Con Artist (cute), and started I Am Princess X (mystery). 2017 Georgia Peach Books

The Novice

Sneak peek at one of next year’s Peach books… The Novice by Taran Matharu. In the donations from Dr. Drouillard, was the first book of the Summoner series - the fantasy selection out of next year’s Peach titles. Needless to say, it became my spring break reading. Nothing really new here, but the plot is well paced and the main character is likeable. Ancient power struggles between humans, orcs, elves, and dwarves set in a typical and rather generic medieval type world (the best part is the description of the dwarf homes). Unknown origins of Fletcher, the orphan boy, help keep you reading. Fletcher, raised by the village blacksmith, is forced to flee when he discovers he has magic by accidentally summoning a demon. The demon, whom Fletcher names Ignatius, is the best part - so cuddly - I want one. Fletcher ends up training in a school for battle mages - again nothing really new. He makes friends and enemies and uncovers a scheme pivotal to the future of the kingdom. Cliffhanger ending. My twelve year old read it in one day and was asking for the sequel so I think my fantasy readers will enjoy it next year.

Help with Hanging Indents in Google Docs

Instructions for Creating a Hanging Indent in Google Docs

1. Make sure your page line spacing in set for double space.

2. Make sure that you can see the Googe Docs Ruler bar. (Click VIEW and check SHOW RULER if it is not)

3. Type all the text of your entries in proper MLA format. Worry about the hanging indent at the end. Make sure you have all your info per source in proper order. Make sure sources are in alphabetical order.

4. Once you have all the sources typed in double space and in proper order, you are ready to do the hanging indent.

5. First: select the text you want indented (highlight your first source)

6. Second: on the ruler, drag the Left Indent (light blue inverted triangle) to the right five spaces. Note: all of your source will move to the right

7. Last: drag the First Line Indent Marker (light blue rectangle) back to the left margin, leaving the triangle where it is.

8. Done! Now repeat with the rest of your sources.

Help with MLA Header in Google Docs

How To Set Up MLA Header in Google Docs

1. Open new doc

2. Click on Insert and choose Header

3. Notice how the curser is blinking on the left, click on the Right Align icon to move the blinking curser to the right.

4. Press return

5. Press Enter 2 times

5. Change font to Times New Roman and change size to 12 pt.

6. Type your last name and a space

7. Click on Page Number and choose upper right

Many thanks to Associate Professor Colette Drouillard of Valdosta State University for donating over $9,000 in chapter and picture books to Bainbridge High and Decatur County Schools! For the second year, Dr. Drouillard's generous donation has helped stock our Media Centers' shelves with current, popular fiction and non-fiction books. Dr. Drouillard has served on several children's and young adults' literature award committees and teaches in the Library and Information Studies Department at VSU. Her research focuses on reading motivation in children.

New Books Are Here!

I LOVE Christmas in the Library! This is what I call the arrival of all the Follett boxes packed with new books. We are unpacking and processing right now. Hope to have them ready to go Monday morning if not before. WooHoo!

Phoenix Island

Finally finished reading Phoenix Island and creating the RC counts quiz for it! Talk about non-stop action/adventure thriller... Carl has a good heart, but a rough life. Now an orphan and in trouble with the law, he is banished to a juvenile boot camp for orphans on an island of the coast of... well, no one was really specific about that. It doesn't take Carl too long to figure out Phenix Island is not your regular boot camp type program. The drill sergeants take "mean" to a new level. Kids disappear. A mad doctor runs the "Chop Shop." Of course, it's complete with a megalomaniac. Soon, Carl just is just trying to survive the day, but that's difficult when you are "an individual" with a strong sense of responsibility to protect the weak and wounded. Carl has two things going for him: he's smart and he's a former boxing champion. Will that be enough for him to survive? What about Ross and Octavia? Can he save them too? Read it and find out...
